How To Get A Ham Broadcast License

In my research into this, I found that many of the free-banders out there actually do not know that the frequencies they are operating on are illegal to use. In fact, many of them are down-right adamant that these are standard CB frequencies and they have every right to use them. Others are and always have been, well, outlaws and they know the risks they take.

Thomas Guide maps are designed so they're broken up into pages and grids. If you give a copy of your map to someone, and say "I'll be here", when searchers look on their maps, they know what grid you're in, and have a good idea of where to look. It greatly improves your chances.

Imagine those old movies of the drawbridges on castles, where one side of the bridge lifts up. Bascules are the modern name for "drawbridge", and always lift up on one or both sides on a hinge. On your navigation chart, bascules show an open section in the middle of the waterway. Most bascule bridges are too low for sailboats to pass beneath, so you must call the bridge tender on your icom marine radio and request that they open the bridge.

At first I thought this division of labor ridiculous. Blue and pink? How sexist! Over time, though, as I thought about that conversation, I saw method in the surface madness. Thinking about my own experience, I realized that my cruising partner and I had implicitly divided our jobs along similar lines. I was responsible for basic homemaking stuff - like cooking, cleaning, laundry, keeping water tanks filled - as well as being the primary radio operator, family communicator, and business manager. He took care of the engine, the sailing systems, the outboard, the electrical system, and he made sure all of our electronics stayed in working order. We just hadn't acknowledged our division of labor like Tom and Elaine had.

Although the first mobile phones were not put out until the 1980s, the Nokia Company was involved with military and icom communications starting in the 1960s. However, the mobile phones, which are what they are most known for today, began with gust in 1982. This was when Nokia introduced its first car phone, which was called the Mobira Senator. In 1984, the Mobira Talkman was launched, which was the first transportable phone in the world. In 1987, Nokia also introduced the world's first handheld phone, which was called the Mobira Cityman 900. The Senator had weighed 21 pounds, and the Talkman weighed in at 11 pounds. However, the Cityman was only 28 ounces, which made it much easier to hold. However, it cost about 24,000 Finnish marks, which was 4,560 Euros, or more than 8,000 dollars.

If you don't have an AM/FM radio or a weather/alert radio available a radio scanner (also known as a police scanner or race scanner) can be a good alternative to get information. Depending on the scanner's capabilities, they can pick up a wide range of frequencies, including the NOAA frequencies. Like the AM/FM radios and weather/alert radios, they cannot transmit a signal.

Read the manual that comes with your radio and practice using it before an emergency occurs. Have others on your boat learn to use the radio as well. Channels used in the United States don't match up with international marine channel assignments. Channel assignments unique to the United States carry the suffix A or alpha. Check your radio and there will be a switch labeled US/International, be sure it's in the right position.
